Stephanie Tom TongI am an assistant professor at Wayne State University, previously appointed at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. I earned my M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication from Michigan State University and undergraduate degrees in Communication and English from the University of California, Davis.

My work focuses on the intersection between computer-mediated communication (CMC) and interpersonal communication. The goal of my research is to understand how social computing systems such as social network websites, online chat, and online dating websites are changing the way people initiate, maintain, and terminate close relationships. My current research project investigates the online dating process with particular focus on how people use mediated technology to search for and develop romantic partnerships.
